Abstract

This article highlights several trends of Urdu chronogram among the writers of Urdu in the nineteenth century. Tarikh goi is widely known for either using it to titles of the Urdu poetic books or to compose a stanza or a phrase on the demise of a poet or writer to remember his or her year of death by counting the numbers attributed to every Urdu alphabet used. This article in its introduction provides a brief picture of its social and literary importance in the nineteenth century when the art of Tarikh goi reached its zenith among the poets and writer of Urdu. It also gives some of the important names of the poets of Urdu who had the gift to create a stanza or phrase for denoting the year of a book title, demise of a poet or writer or the date of birth of newborn to document. The article deserves special mention to cover some of the rare dictionary compiled, meant for providing a database for the people who then strived for searching the names based on the art of Tarikh goi. It also mentions 217 book titles and personal names with carefully written notes for each entry. The article presents a wonderful picture for books' title and their back ground information.
