Abstract

This article aims at exploring the vulgar or slang (bazari, awami, ganwari) use of Urdu words in the Urdu dictionaries of the nineteenth century. It mentions many Urdu equivalents for such use of language by the lexicographers. The article also discusses what then standard Urdu was. To this, it refers many known Urdu dictionaries, lexicographers and poets. It also refers many known lexicographical works to share varying standards for the vulgar Urdu words. The article also shares a table in which how 10 known lexicographical works treated the vulgar, slang, corrupted and rustic Urdu words. The article explained these words as well. There was no same standard among Urdu lexicographers to include these words in their works. The social background of the lexicographers led to varying standards for these words. The dictionary of S W Fellon was a good example which identified such words through language registers. John T Platts followed the example to some extent.
