Abstract

This article presents thoroughly annotated 23 Ruq’at-e Sarmad comprising four sections: brief life account of mystic and poet Sarmad; Persian text of the Ruq’at; their English translation; and their Urdu translation. The Ruqa’t are replete with a deeper mystical truth. Sarmad was an Iranian Jew, who converted to Islam. About 300 rubaiyat in Persian, belonging to Sarmad, a small number of texts in the form of ghazal, qit‘a, a few she‘rs of the poet and his letters were also found. Reminiscences of his contemporaries serve as the sources of information about Sarmad. Among them are the memoirs of Bernier and Manucci and anthologies — tazkira — such as Dabistān-i mazāhib, the author of which is considered to have been Sarmad’s peer, Riyāz ash-shu‘arā’ of Waleh Daghistani also known as ‘Ali Quli Khan and several others. Sarmad’s name appears also in biographies, such as Mir’at al-Khayāl by Sher Khan Lodi, Majma‘an-Nafā’is by Siraj ad-Din Ali Khan Arzu, Riyāz al- ‘Ārifīn by Riza Quli Khan. Maulana Abul Kalam Azad found Mir’at al Khayal the most authenticated work on Sarmad. It can also be found in historical chronicles, Mir’at al-‘ālam by Muhammad Bakhtawar Khan and others. Dabistān-i mazāhib and Riyāz ash-shu‘arā’ are the most valuable ones among the rest۔
