Abstract

This article aims at exploring similarities of Dhivehi language of Maldives islands with Urdu. The Dhivehi language provides the history of the islands. It is deeply influenced by the modern Indo-Aryan languages. Its early manuscripts found have words from Arabic language being used frequently in Dhivehi language. Many researchers have carried out researches on the language and its people and done lot to find its relations with other languages of the region. In 1151, the preaching of Islam began in the islands. Since then, many Arabic and Persian legal terms began pouring in it for centuries. In the sixteenth century, Portuguese came in Maldives islands and remained there from 1558 to 1573. The islands came under the control of British powers in 1772 and it came into being as an independent island in 1965.
