Abstract

Before the works of Ghalib, Urdu poetry had many things to present but thought. Estheticization of feelings and sentiments was considered beauty of poetry. Thoughts were then little discussed in the Urdu poetics. This article aims at providing Persian verses from Ghalib to evidence how Ghalib valued rational thinking in his poetry and he demonstrated it in his Mughanni Nama. The article presents many questions to prove Ghalib was a rationalist in his poetry. One such question is if Ghalib had the primary motive to present Khirad in his creative genius, then where would poetry find its way? Ghalib answers poetry does not find its way in the realm of Khirad but it is the faculty of thinking that can bring poetry into existence.
