Abstract

The story of Sohni Mahiwaal shares the combined literary traditions of the Punjab and Sindh. The story is presented nearby area of the river Chanab and noted Sindhi poet Shah Abdul Latif rendered into Sindhi language. Sufi poet Shah Abdul Latif unfolds the story from the river water which has a symbolic value in it. The poet used the words to solace Sohni were frequently used by the Sufi poets of the thirteenth century. Her pot broke had a deeper meaning. The story revolves around a wife yearning for her husband to get back to his home. In the story Shah Latif was inspired by the several colors of the daily life of Sindhi women whose husbands were living their lives in the dangers of rivers.
