This article aims at exploring similarities of Dhivehi language of Maldives islands with Urdu. The Dhivehi language provides the history of the islands. It is deeply influenced by the modern Indo-Aryan languages. Its early manuscripts found have words from Arabic language being used frequently in Dhivehi language. Many researchers have carried out researches on the language and its people and done lot to find its relations with other languages of the region. In 1151, the preaching of Islam began in the islands. Since then, many Arabic and Persian legal terms began pouring in it for centuries. In the sixteenth century, Portuguese came in Maldives islands and remained there from 1558 to 1573. The islands came under the control of British powers in 1772 and it came into being as an independent island in 1965.
Dr Abu Salman Shahjahanpuri has been reckoned to be the only Pakistani scholar for over a half of century working on the life and works of Abul Kalam Azad. Mr Shahjahanpuri is more admired in India than his homeland ie Pakistan where he migrated soon after the partition. His many works have focused the pre-partition history of the sub-continent. He has produced works depicting the intellectual history of region particularly the scholars of Deoband. He has edited and compiled political and literary works and above all bibliographies on the aforesaid themes. To record his works produced so far,this bibliographical account contains almost all his works, biographical sketches written by his contemporaries and reviews of his books.
The review presents the contents of Karachi: Ordered Disorder and the Struggle for the City by Laurent Gayer surveying the various threads that go into Karachi’s landscape of violence. Karachi’s violence has shown patterns of organization, containment and continuity in certain areas of the city. Karachi’s violence within its historical roots i.e the displaced populations arriving in the city after Partition which sparked Karachi’s chronic land and housing crisis. Examining MQM, he traces the roots of Mohajir nationalism in the early 1970s during the ethnic tensions between Sindhis and Mohajirs. From there onward, he represents an intriguing account of the organizations and its double-speak regarding its revolutionary ideological rhetoric and practical politics of operating through state institutions. The chapter Jihad Comes to Town relates the story of the large swathes of land that have come under the Taliban influence post 9/11 and how that has disturbed the existing order in the city.
اس کتاب کو کراچی سے آکسفرڈ یونی ورسٹی پریس نے شائع کیا ہے جس پراس کتاب کا سال اشاعت۲۰۱۷ء رقم ہے جب کہ یہ کتاب کراچی میںدسمبر۲۰۱۶ء میںہونے والے کتابی میلے میں فروخت کے لیے موجود تھی۔ عام طو ر پر معروف ناشرین سرورق کے ڈیزائن کے خالق کا نام دینا ضروری سمجھتے ہیں۔ اس کتاب میں اس حوالے سے کچھ رقم نہیں کیا گیا ہے۔ اس کتاب کو سراکیوس یونی ورسٹی پریس (Syracuse Unveristy Press) سے۲۰۱۳ء شائع کیا جا چکا ہے۔ مصنفہ نے کتاب کے آغاز میں نشان دہی کی ہے کہ اس کتاب کے کچھ ابواب ایسے ہیں جو مختلف رسائل میں اس سے قبل شائع ہوچکے ہیں۔
