Abstract

This Urdu translation provides deep analysis about Persian lexicography in the nineteenth century India written by Heinrich Blockmann, German orientalist and scholar of Persian language and literature who spent most of his career in India. The translation gives details about over 60 Persian lexicons. H Blockmann discussed contents of some of the known Persian works on lexicography. Blockmann mentions Burhan Qate as one of the few Persian dictionaries which saw criticism in India. Ghalib critiqued it much but Blockmann pointed out that the criticism done by Ghalib has little importance to prove him as a critic on lexicography and it damaged his reputation. Blockmann admired Aarzoo as one of the most sensible reviewers of the works of Persian lexicography. The translation mentioned his works on lexicography as Sirajul Lughaat and Chiraghe Hidayat. He says Aarzoo reviewed Burhan quite sensibly. The later editions of the lexicon had its necessary feature to include his review in it.
