Abstract

This article aims at comparing the two editions of Murraqa-e Chughtai Dewan-e Ghalib Musawwar, Lahore, by Muhammad Abdul Rehman Chughtai. The first edition came in 1928 and the second was in 1967. The first edition was dedicated to Justice S A Rehman. This had 34 pictures. What the great painter inspired? Abdul Rehman Bijnori’s article Mahaasin-e Kalam-e Ghalib was first published in magazine Urdu, Aurangabad, January 1921. This article motivated this great artist Abdul Rehman Chughtai to paint the couplets of Ghalib. Abdul Rehman Chughtai in its second edition edited by his brother Abdul Raheem Chughtai in 1967 for which Abdul Rehman expressed his satisfaction. This had only 22 pictures. During the Second World War, the block and pictures of the first edition were misplaced. Abdul Rehman Chughtai had in his mind to republish it keeping in its popularity among its wide audience. For the second edition, the selection of pictures took over 25 years. The second edition has many things different to its first editions.
