Translation of holly Quran, divide in scholars of Al Azhar UniversityAbstract
This article aims at highlighting how Marmaduke Pickthall succeeded in benefiting the learned class of English language through his English translation of the holy Quran in 1930. The English discerning class received it with open arms and the Times Literary Supplement reckoned it to be ‘a great literary achievement’ as the translator had a reputation as a novel writer and the big name of English literature D H Lawrence, H G Wells and E M Foster recognised him. Allama Rasheed Raza, a disciple of Muhammad Abduho, reviewed the translation word for word. Having completed the translation, he knew that his work of translation would not be welcomed unless the scholars at Al Azhar University accept it. There was a divide between the traditional and modern point of views in Al Azhar University. Shaikh Muhammad Shakir was one of the traditional scholars who disagree to accept the translation by saying it a sheer kufr if the holy Quran translated. On the other hand, Shaikh Mustafa Al Maraghi gave him the permission to do what he wanted.
