Abstract

This article shares statistics about the places and people of Delhi in the early eighteenth century contained in a manuscript, archived in the section of Oriental Manuscripts of Adembra University. The East India Company (EIC) used to carry out such surveys through its native’s informants. The manuscript is believed to be a survey carried out at the behest of the EIC. Statistics of the city produced to show the nature of the information contained: police stations and kotwaals and policemen of other ranks posted there; the gates and gate keepers manned there; some of the known Ajmeri door, Kashmiri door, Badro door, Lahore door, Delhi door and many more; number of people such men, women, boys and girls; names of 57 prominent people lending money; 49 rich people of the city; 19 known tabeeb (physicians) of the city; houses and madrasas (seminaries) of the different natures; graveyards, mortals, main-roads of the city; known place of the city; and wells of sweet and sour water for city and etc.
