Abstract

This article highlights the brief story behind an Arabic work titled Imteha-nul alalabba Lakafatal atibah and its translation in Urdu. The work mainly deals with education and examination questions and answers of Hakims, traditional physicians using herbal medicines. Allama Shibli Naumani mentions that Hakim Badruddin had the work in his personnel collection but it had some of the pages missing. In obtaining the missing pages, Badruddin even advertised in dailies. Hakim Badruddin asked Shibli whether he knew the work. Shibli declined but promised to let him know if found any clues about it. Shibli travelled to Cairo where his visited the Khadivia library and found the work there. He noted the details about it. On returning back to his home land, he shared information to Hakim Badruddin. Shibli made efforts to get the missing pages arranged from the library. Hakim Badruddin was a known figure. He was one of the best disciples of Hakim Ahsanullah who was court Hakim of the last Mughal emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar. In his absence, Badruddin was assigned some of the important works.
