Abstract

The article shares two rare letters from Syed Abul Ala Maududi to a noted scholar and biographer Maulana Ghulam Rasool Mahr in 1926 and 1952 respectively. The article contains notes and explanations. A letter of 1926 is about the legal proceedings relating to a book Wachter Jeevan by Pandit Kali Chiran, being trialed in an Agra court of India. Maulana Maududi expresses his displeasure over the advocates of the accused, the writer of the book, as they were asking questions from the witnesses in an unsuitable manner. Maulana Maududi criticized the district magistrate who was there to see the proceedings and did nothing to intervene. Maulana said in his letter it was like a forum to criticize Hazrat Muhammad (pbuh). Maulana advised it was difficult to save one’s faith from such court. No matter any contemptuous proceeding would surface, the attitude of the court should be criticized. No Muslim would be prepared as a witness nor would the Islamic newspapers find the court above from the criticism.
