The article contains the brief biography and prose and poetical works of Syed Hasan Shah Zabt. Zabt was a lineal descendent of Syed Abdullah widely known as Mazloom. Zabt’s novel Nishtar (1790) was one of the early works of the genre in Urdu language. One of the Persian poetical works by Zabt was rendered into Urdu by his brother Mir Husain Shah Haqiqat, titled, Gazb-e Ishq. Haqiqat’s son Mohsin Ali Mohsin was also known for his Tazkira Sarapa-e Sukhan and Shuara-e Urdu. Sarapa-e Sukhan was one of the different works of Tazkira containing short biographies of 733 poets. The rare work contains poetry on parts of human body. Many Tazkira writers of Urdu and Persian have written Zabt’s brief life account in their works including his couplets. Zabts’ interest in poetry brought him into contact with Shaikh Qalandar Buksh Jur’at a Ustad poet of Urdu classical period. Later on Jur’at accepted him as his disciple.Read More →
